Hi all,

As part of the Commonwealth Games Legacy Programme, the Scottish Government has commissioned SCDC to work with community organisations across Scotland to support them to use the Games as a catalyst for building on their work to develop activities and projects that involve local people, increase local community action and support the achievement of better health and social outcomes.

If you are a community organisation, or know of a community organisation, who would like to participate in this programme and would like more information, please visit our website www.scdc.org.uk/commonwealth-games-involving-communities/ or contact Olivia Hanley on olivia@scdc.org.uk

Hi everyone,

CHEX have just launched a new resource - The Picture of Health: a community-led health film.

The Picture of Health highlights community-led health activity in four communities in Aberdeenshire, Edinburgh, Isle of Bute and the Scottish Borders by bringing to life the health impact that community-led health organisations have on individuals and the wider community.

The film tells us about the health benefits of intergenerational work in the Mearns and Coastal Healthy Living Initiative; the organisation of community participation for health activity through the Eyemouth Healthy Living Group; how the Pilmeny Development Project’s Men’s Health Group in Leith has transcended cultures and enhanced mental health and well being; and how young people have used Bute Healthy Living Initiative as a stepping stone to training and articulating their particular needs, and how the Healthy Living Initiative has developed a social enterprise trading arm.

The film also features some of the CHEX team who talk about CHEX’s role in promoting community development approaches and supporting community-led health organisations and their public sector partners in developing and sharing good practice to build the evidence base for community-led health.

We hope you find the film valuable in working with communities on health improvement and in particular the building of asset based and co-production work between public sector providers and community members.

Clips from the film are available on the CHEX website (www.chex.org.uk) which links to our YouTube channel. The film is available with or without subtitles. We also have a small number of hard copies which have already been snapped up; however please contact us if you think this would be useful for your organisation as we are compiling a list of interested organisations and may consider producing more copies if possible.

For any enquiries relating to the film, please contact olivia@scdc.org.uk

Thanks George. We are currently preparing an SCDC response to the Commission’s report, would you be happy for us to send you the draft for any feedback you might have and perhaps we could take things from there regarding any discussion?

Hi Olivia- I would welcome involvement in the discussion. Strikes me that, whilst Christie is safe and sound thre's a need for  re-invention that requires a different mindset. As always, the relationship between public services and citizens- volunteers is key- and the need for trust between the two is essential. Things do change when there's a genuine 'can do' culture underpinned by trust.

Hi everyone,

Scottish Community Development Centre (SCDC) welcomes the Christie Commission report’s emphasis on the need to tackle persisting inequalities in Scottish society and the need to engage and work with local communities and individuals in order to build their capacity, resilience and independence.  We are currently preparing a response to the Christie Commission report in order to engage with national and local policy makers to develop real and practical actions that will help take forward the commission’s recommendations.  If you are interested in taking part in such a discussion please contact andrew@scdc.org.uk or phone 0141 222 4837.  Alternatively, you can contribute to our discussion on the new SCDC Facebook page.

Hi folks,

You might be interested in a new resource, 'Appreciating Assets', has been produced by IACD and the Carnegie UK Trust. It's aimed at helping community development practitioners, activists and policymakers get to grips with what asset-based community development involves at a practical level - taking the view that theCover of Appreciating Assets document primary asset of a place is often its people and their untapped potential. While it's aimed primarily at UK and Irish contexts, it draws on experiences from across the globe.

Download the document from www.iacdglobal.org/publications/iacd-reports/appreciating-assets, http://www.carnegieuktrust.org.uk/ or http://www.fieryspirits.com/. For further details, read the press release.

Thanks Olivia,

I'm sure my name is down for the event...just to check?

Looking forward to the event shame we can't host it in the beautiful Mackintosh room anymore!  But great to have it in Glasgow this time.

Looking forward to it and glad to see a few more members in this group.

Hi everyone,

I have just joined the group on behalf of the Scottish Community Development Centre. I am responsible for information and communications and would like to let you know that the second meeting of the Scottish Co-producers Network will take place at in Glasgow on Tuesday 17th May between 2pm and 4pm.

The network is currently being coordinated and facilitated by NHS Tayside and SCDC. At present, information relevant to co-production in a Scottish context is located on the SCDC website http://www.scdc.org.uk/co-production-scotland/.  We are happy to host as much information on the site as possible and, if anyone would like items to be included on the site, please contact me mailto:olivia@scdc.org.uk"">olivia@scdc.org.uk.

At this second meeting, Stuart Hashagen from the Scottish Community Development Centre will provide a brief update on the Community Resilience and Co-production research project funded by NES. Julia Slay New Economics Foundation (nef) will give an account of the recent Co-production Road shows but, in broad terms the meeting will provide an opportunity to share learning and exchange practice experience with one another.

If you are interested in attending the meeting on 17 May, please contact me by email no later than 6th May so that we know how many people to expect. For further information in relation to the Scottish Co-producers Network please contact me directly olivia@scdc.org.uk

Thanks and I look forward to seeing some of you there.

Olivia
