Southwark and Lambeth Early Action Commission Report Launch

Local Early Action: How to Make It Happen

Launch of the Southwark and Lambeth Early Action Commission Report

Monday 16th November, 1-4 pm

Coin Street Conference Centre, 108 Stamford Street, SE1 9NH

Members will be interested in the work of the Southwark and Lambeth Early Action Commission. Citizen participation in political and community life, including through co-production in service design and delivery, features prominently in the Commission’s recommendations.

The Commission, chaired by Rt Hon Margaret Hodge MP, recommends ways of tackling the causes, rather than the symptoms, of problems such as childhood obesity, unemployment, social isolation and violent crime.  Set up by the Health and Wellbeing Boards of the London boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth, it is the first major attempt to make early action a priority for locally-based organisations.

Early action is about preventing problems, rather than coping with them.  It not only improves the quality of people’s lives, but also saves taxpayers’ money, by reducing demand for costly services.  The Commission has built on work at national level by the Early Action Task Force and by the Public Accounts Committee. It has carried out extensive research as well as dialogue with local people and experts in early action. It finds that shifting towards early action and prevention is the only viable response to the current scale of public spending cuts.

The Commission’s recommendations point the way not just for Southwark and Lambeth, but for all who work in health and local  government, in the voluntary sector and local enterprise, in policing and job centres, in all corners of the UK.  We hope this report helps to fuel a big public debate and to turn the tide of policy and spending towards effective early action.

Please join us on 16th November to discuss the Commission’s findings and recommendations.  Register now using the link below and we will send further details shortly.
