Northamptonshire Community Housing & Support Network
Background to your work
We have recently coproduced a Learning Diability Housing Plan for the County. The whole project was jointly managed by people with Learning Disabilities, their supporters, other community members & professionals. The Steering Group was 50:50 with community members cochairing the project.

One of the main actions from the work has been to set up a community led Network to help people with a learning disbility help each other to explore their housing options, find a new home & settle in to our community.

We are building the Network on coproduction principles & creating an innovative business model where we seek to sustain the network using a combination of private monies & time sharing.

The Network will be made up of members who share their personal & professional skills to help each other and provide the services of the Network. Organisations can also join and share their skills and needs.

This model will avoid the need for 'staff' doing for others as we help each member to 'do' for themselves with support if required.

The Network will be open to any person or body in Northants who is interested in supporting themselves & others in this way, not just people with learning disability.

Once established we hope to broaden our remit to also help other vulnerable people to find a home & be supported within our community.

People will be able to 'pay' for the support they receive using a combination of money and timecredits. We also intend that where memebers contribute their skills they will have the choice to recieve reward for this in both money & timecredits on a % basis.

Given the increasing pressures on the income of vulnerable people, on the services they use & the people who provide these services, we hope the Network will be able to attract many local people with professional skills who wish to contribute, as well as offer a form of employment to many people with learning disabilities.

We have found a host for the Network locally and have been awarded some 'seed money' by two local Councils.

It is our intention to launch the work of the Network in September 2011 but begin work with members from May to bring in to being and start creating some of the housing training material we want to share with people, families & professionals.

We are taking 2011-2012 as a year to test out & pilot our ideas, and aiming for the Network to be a self sustaining but interdependant body by April 2012.

This looks really great Marion. I'd be interested in finding out more and perhaps writing about it for my personalisation column in Community Care - please could you drop me an email alex@naaps.org.uk so I have your contact details? I wonder if you are familiar with the work of Keyring, whch sounds like it has some similarities with what you are doing? You might also be interested in linking up with the Shared Lives service in your area.
