Topics in Radiation The Guideline for Radiation Safety has been approved by the AORN Guidelines Advisory Board. It was presented as a proposed guideline for comments by members and others. The guideline is effective June 15, 2015. The recommendations in the guideline are intended to be achievable and represent what is believed to be an optimal level of practice. radsafe.pitt.edu Radiation Dose to Adults From Common Imaging Examinations Procedure Approximate effective radiation dose Comparable to natural background radiation for ABDOMINAL REGION Computed Tomography (CT) — Abdomen and Pelvis 10 mSv 3 years Computed Tomography (CT) — Abdomen and Pelvis, repeated with and without contrast material 20 mSv 7 years standards of safety for protection of health and minimization of danger to life and property, and to provide for the application of these standards. The publications by means of which the IAEA establishes standards are issued in the IAEA Safety Standards Series. This series covers nuclear safety, radiation safety, transport safety and waste safety. Radiation Safety. Radiation safety includes a basic understanding of ionizing radiation and its use in diagnostic medicine. Radiation safety may also require formal instruction regarding x-rays and radiation issues. Please direct your questions regarding specific protocols to the facility radiation safety officer (RSO). Principles and Knowledge • General Radiation Safety rules must be posted in each laboratory in which radioactive materials are used. General rules include no smoking, eating, drinking, storing of food, mouth pipetting of radioactive materials, and similar guidelines The Environmental Health and Safety Departments at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and the Radiation Safety offices of Weill Cornell Medical College and Columbia University work together to maintain the safest possible environment with regard to the use of radioactivity and radiation producing equipment. Radiation Safety relating to veterinary medicine and animal health technology in California 2012 This booklet is published by the California Veterinary Medical Board. The Radiation Protection website describes EPA's radiation protection activities, regulations and supporting information. The radiation that passes through the body does not. The scientific unit of measurement for whole body radiation dose, called "effective dose," is the millisievert (mSv). Other radiation dose measurement units include rad, rem, roentgen, sievert, and gray. Doctors use "effective dose" when they talk about the risk of radiation to the entire body. The radiation that passes through the body does not. The s
