Poor Folk by Fyodor Dostoevsky, a free text and ebook for easy online reading, study, and reference. Poor Folk is the debut novel of Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky. The title interestingly hints at the background of why Dostoevsky decided to write the novel, as well as to write novels in general. Carefully preserving the original work's acclaimed narrative style and combination of biography, intellectual history, and literary criticism, Dostoevsky: A Writer in His Time illuminates the writer's works-from his first novel Poor Folk to Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov-by setting them in their personal, historical Poor Folk was Dostoyevsky's first great triumph in fiction and the work that looks forward to the double-acts and obsessions of his later genius. The text begins: April 8th. (1) MY DEAREST BARBARA ALEXIEVNA, —How happy I was last night—how immeasurably, how impossibly happy! That was because for once in your life you had relented so far as to obey my wishes. Dostoevsky's account provides an irresistibly hagiographic version of the great drama of his conscience. "Poor Folk" is a brilliant piece, especially considering that it was written by a 22-year-old Dostoevsky. I don't know how he came up with such characters (none of them resemble himself, except, perhaps, Pokrovsky) or how such a young writer could possibly fathom the depths of the suffering souls he himself created. Dostoevsky continued his military training and held government posts until he resigned to become a writer. When he was twenty-five, he published his first novel, Poor Folk, which an influential critic of the time called the "first attempt at a social novel" by a Russian writer. The novel's success brought Dostoevsky into con- The fact that _____ endorsed Dostoevsky's first work, Poor Folk, was a tremendous boost for the young writer. Belinsky Dostoevsky supposedly said that all of Russian literature emerged from a short story by Nicolai Gogol called _________. In summary, if you want to read a Dostoyevsky's book, this is probably not the one you should pick. If you want to read a love story, 'Poor Folk' is not the greatest one you will find. The only reason to read this book is either to review Dostoyevsky's work or to understand the evolution of the writer.
